Visiting Tibet is often considered to be an almost spiritual experience, or at least it would have been a century ago. Deciding to travel to Lhasa is a very different experience these days, and the occupation of Tibet is something that has changed the nature of the city. There is still the palace on the hill that has been the symbol of the country for many years, but even the population has been changing. There is an awful lot of history that can still be seen in Lhasa, but you are more likely to buy your souvenirs from someone of Chinese rather than Tibetan origin.
Another reason that many people will want to visit Tibet is so they can visit some of the highest mountains in the world. Tibet is a country that is almost entirely at high altitude, where even the desolate places have a majesty that is difficult to rival.
